Sunset at Haleakala Crater—January 2005 © David Brotsky |
Here is the plan: A) Go to a nice area in Morris County NJ, about 70 minutes from NYC, which is full of activities in the area and we usually get a balanced mix of singles, couples, families and kids, B) Choose one of two options (i) Either Go Blueberry & Peach picking, take a self guided tour of historic chester, and go on a guided tour of a 200 year old grist mill , (ii) Or Go on a 5 to 7 mile hike that partially follows a beautiful stream visiting an exotic natural gorge and go on a tour of a 200 year old Grist Mill C) End the day with both groups at a 5:30 PM kosher catered BBQ for all (carnivores, omnivores and vegetarians), with volleyball and other activities What more do you need? See below for the highlights and visit our FAQ Page for more details. It’s a little early in the week, but the weather looks to be partly sunny and in the low 80s... Here are some of the activities available: ** Hiking (5 to 6.5 miles, intermediate and partially along a beautiful stream) ** Fruit Picking at Alstede Farm - Peaches are starting to peak and Blueberries are at the end of the season—we might also be able to pick some vegetables as well!! All of the costs of fruit picking are extra - You will get a 20% off voucher, which entitles you to get 20% of the admission prices for Allstede and in addition to paying admission, you will also have to pay for the fruit that you pick at Allstede. ** Tour the historic Cooper Grist Mill and learn how grains are milled and ground! ** Kosher BBQ for All, carnivores, omnivores and vegetarians - Catered BBQ under the Vaad of Flatbush ** Self Guided Tour of Historic Chester - Chester, a historic 200 hundred year old town a few miles away, has a free historic coach ride running every 10 minutes till 6 PM. In town, there are some nice shops and historic buildings to see...see the town’s website for more details ** Volleyball, Soccer and Frisbee and stomp rockets that go as high as 200 ft for kids and adults Please see the event details page for all the specifics…and see below for all the pricing Decide quickly so you won’t get closed out! Right now, the weather looks to be awesome ( in the mid 80s and sunny). Severe rain cancels, but otherwise the event will occur. YOU MUST PAY IN ADVANCE FOR THIS EVENT VIA PAYPAL AT THE END OF THE RSVP FORM OR BY CHECK. GIVEN THE SIZE OF THIS EVENT, PEOPLE WHO DO NOT REGISTER PROPERLY, DO NOT PAY IN ADVANCE, OR SUPPLY ALL REQUIRED INFORMATION BY THE DEADLINES ABOVE WILL BE REJECTED. This is a new event, but in general for large events like this we close the RSVPS and have to reject many people because people registered late or incompletely. This year we had over 100 for our Memorial Day, and at some point I will close this out. It could be as large! Register QUICKLY, so you don’t get closed out! Directions We are meeting and will be based at the historic Cooper Grist Mill, in Chester, NJ. We will be having the mill tour and BBQ here. and the hike will leave from here. The Farm we are going to for fruit picking is 4/10 of a mile away at Allstede Farm, and the 4 H County Fair is 5/10 of a mile away, across the street from Allstede Farms. Cooper Grist Mill - Meet at 11:00 am if hiking, 12 pm if Fruit Picking GPS Address: Here is a link to a google map to generate your own directions For those coming hiking, you need to meet by 11:00 AM, for those going to the Fruit picking and 4 H County Fair, you need to meet by 12:00 PM. Since we will very likely have a large group, we need to go on the tours at separate times, hence the need for a staggered start. Driving Times Manhattan, Riverdale , Monsey, Queens & Brooklyn—1 Hr and 15 minutes Teaneck & Passaic - 1 hr Central NJ – 45 minutes Long Island – 1hr, 30 minutes Rides, Van & Train Option Rides We will try and arrange rides, likely via a google docs spreadsheet we will start to post as of Tuesday for those who register, so the earlier you register the easier it will be to get a ride— from our experience, we usually manage to get most people rides of some sort. The ride fee will be $20 round trip. For drivers who take at least 2 passengers, you will more than cover your driving expenses. Passengers, please pay the driver $20 when you enter the car. They are doing you a favor, so please have the money available in cash. Van/Bus Potential If we have enough people who need transportation but cant get a ride, we will see about a van or bus option, likely adding $25—$35 per person for transport to and from the event. We may also then send people on the train - see below. Let us know your preferences on the RSVP questionnaire. Timing Hiking & Mill Tour - Meet at Cooper Mill by 11:00. Fruit Picking, Mill Tour & 4 H County Fair - Meet at Cooper Mill by 12 pm BBQ—Meet at Cooper Mill no earlier than 4:30 pm, BBQ at 5:30 PM. The event will likely end by 7:30 pm.
