a.        This is a wonderful and easy to moderate bike trip mostly along River Road, alongside the Housatonic River for much of the time. At the midpoint you have a beautiful 150 year old covered bridge that you will visit in West Cornwall, CT. The trip is 12 miles long roundtrip and takes about 2 to 2.5 hours from start to finish. Here are turn by turn directions for this ride.

a. Bike Rentals will cost $25 per person. This trip leaves from Isabella Freedman. We will have the option to do this on Thursday PM, Friday AM and PM, and Sunday AM and PM. Please let us know on the RSVP form if you want this biking option so we can rent you a bike!

Biking directions - Housatonic River to Covered Bridge In West Cornwall.

1. Go to entrance of Isabella Freedman. Make a left on Johnson Rd.

2. Ride down the hill for less than 5 minutes, for about  ¾ of a mile . Johnson Rd will end and you are forced to make a right or at left.

3. Make a Left, onto US- 7 (you will not see a sign for RT 7 here, only further along, but it is Rt 7. You will see a sign for Mohawk Trail though.)

4. Go along US – 7 for less than 1 minute ( less than 1000 ft) Stay on the right side of the road.

5. At the 1st traffic light, make a left onto Lime Rock Station Rd, before the bridge over the Housatonic River.  This road (Lime Rock Station) parallels train tracks on one side and eventually turns into River Rd, which is the main road along the Housatonic River. Pay attention, as the road changes from Lime Rock Station Rd to River Road and this occurs right after Lime Rock crosses the train tracks. Continue along River Road for about 4 to 5 miles, till you enter the town of West Cornwall.

6. You will be biking along River Rd for about 5 miles. River Road has little traffic and  is paved part of the way and then after it crosses the train tracks at some point it becomes an UNPAVED packed dirt road/gravel for most of the way

7. River Rd runs alongside the Housatonic River and crosses railroad tracks several times.  It becomes paved again as it heads into West Cornwall.

8. When you hit West Cornwall , you will intersect Sharon/Goshen Rd/RT 128 where you will see the Cornwall Bridge Pottery Store on the opposite side of the street.

9. Make a right onto Sharon/Goshen Rd/RT 128, and go for about 300 ft, where you will encounter a covered bridge, that goes over the Housatonic River. It’s worth stopping and taking some pictures, but be careful as there is no place to stop on the bridge itself.

10. The total distance to the covered bridge is exactly 6 miles, 12 miles round trip. This is the halfway point of the ride. You can come back either via the way you came or via Rt 7, which starts soon after the covered bridge.

11. We recommend that you come back via River Road, as it’s less trafficked and more scenic. It does have some uphill portions, but we think most will prefer this trip back.

If you prefer the loop, and don’t mind cars, on the other side of the covered bridge you can choose to head back to Isabella Freedman by going up the hill and getting on US-7 N for the return trip, along a paved road with some traffic. If so, stay to the right side, on the shoulder when possible.

The trip takes about 1.5 to 2 hrs, and the only major hill is Johnson road, the 1st ¾ of a mile and the last ¾ of a mile. If you have  a flat for some reason, please call Isabella Freedman so we can pick you up. Isabella’s number is (860) 824-5991. Don’t ride far on the bike with a flat as it can damage the tire. Rentals are $25 per bike for up to 2.5 hours.

When done, please place neatly, with helmets, under the porch where you took it from.
