What do I need to bring?

For the day itself, 1 liter water, hat, suntan and bug spray.

For the all day hike - add good walking shoes/boots, 2 liters water vs 1 liter, and a bag to carry to gear in.

For the PM farm working - you must bring and wear a hat, 1 liter water, good shoes and clothing that can get dirty!

For swimming—a bathing suit—we will supply towels.

Transportation—Rides, a bus? And train

We will attempt to get rides for all who ask. Ride preference goes to those who sign up sooner. Rides will cost $20 round trip. Drivers and passengers, let us know on the form!

If we have enough people, we might secure a bus, at $25 to $35 per person, depending on how full the bus is.

We may also need to have some folks come via train. The nearest Metro North train comes to Wassaic station, which is a 25 minute drive from Isabella Freedman—we will arrange a pickup for folks using this method, $15 each way for the pickup—its about 25 minutes from Isabella. The only train that works in the morning that we will attempt a pickup from ( based on interest) is a train leaving grand central around 7:45 AM and arriving  at 10:11 am—you will get to Isabella around 10:45 AM. We will then sort either rides or train transport back. Let us know your preference on the form!

Day Hike Option - This will be a 6 to 8 mile hike, partially along the Appalachian Trail. It will be a solid moderate hike, a 6 on a scale of 1 to 10. Experienced hikers only! We may make it as far as Rands View...

Onsite Hike Option - this will go to the scenic overlook nearby, on Isabella’s property. Its about a 45 minute in an out hike, with one 10 minute portion up a hill that is moderate, but the hike is easy for most, including children as young as 5—7 years old.

Biking -  we will have 3 possible options

 A) Waterfalls Option—Bike to Great Falls, in nearby Falls Village. Easy biking, 3 miles each way, for a total of 6 miles, with some elevation and hills but not too much for most folks. There is also a driving option for families to visit the falls in the afternoon.

B) River  + Covered Bridge Option - Bike Along the Housatonic River, which is very scenic and also see a beautiful covered bridge. Its 6 miles each way to the bridge, for 12 miles total. A moderate bike ride with some hills, especially Johnson Rd on the way back...

C) All Day Option - if there is enough interest, we will also have an All day option, a solid 4 hr biking option in the area which is very scenic, goes along the Housatonic River as in option B, but comes back a longer way, so that it’s a 20 mile loop. This is for serious bikers only, and has some hills to negotiate.

Directions—You can visit Isabella’s page with all the details.

In addition, from New York City, a good friend, Michael Brochstein has come up with these simplified directions vs whats on the Isabella website.

Go north on the Henry Hudson Parkway and then on the Saw Mill River Parkway (which it turns into) until it's northern terminus where you will get onto Route 684 North. Take Route 684 north to it's northern terminus and then merge onto Route 22 North. In the town of Millerton, NY take Route 44 East and then later pick up Route 112 East to Route 7 in Connecticut. Left on Route 7 (north) for a SHORT way. Right on Johnson Road. Camp is on the right at 116 Johnson Road.
