EVENT DESCRIPTION

I am pleased to announce my 1st Annual Biking Event. This event will be biking along the North County Bicycle Trailway, a stunning and scenic biking trail in Westchester County,  which is 1hr to 75 minutes north from New York City.

This bike path is very pretty and picturesque, mostly level, has some nice natural/wetland areas and forest views along the way and crosses over the Croton Reservoir on a dedicated bike bridge, with spectacular views. It follows along an old railroad route, the Old Putnam and it’s one of the better bicycle trails in the entire New York area!

This bike trail is also fairly easy to do because its a dedicated and paved trail which is fairly flat and easy to bike along. Its like going on a hike with a bike! The Standard ride is suitable for beginners who are comfortable riding a bike, event if you haven’t done so in years! We will be renting bikes and helmets for most folks, so don’t worry if you have a working bike or not. See below for all of the details.

I hope to make this an annual event similar to our boating event and various weekends, so help me know if you like this kind of event by signing up ASAP!

We will be based in the lovely FDR State Park for the entire day  which is about 3 miles from the bike trail, where we will have a late afternoon BBQ. Folks will also be able to  play volleyball, basketball or frisbee,go on nature and lake walks in the park and then we will end the day with a Kosher BBQ for omnivores, carnivores and vegetarians.

Please RSVP quickly, as this will sell out, possibly by the early bird deadline. Don’t delay or you will be closed out. I will set up a waiting list, in case of cancellations.

SIGN UP - Complete the RSVP form here, and sending in your deposit (see Costs, below).

PLEASE MAKE SURE TO ANSWER ALL RELEVANT QUESTIONS. THIS HELPS MAKE THE WEEKENDS BETTER AND SIMPLER TO RUN.

PICTURES

I have posted  over 40 pictures of the ride and park here.

BIKE RENTALS, RIDES

Since its hard to get people's bikes to the event, most of you will need to rent bikes. I am having someone bring enough bikes for the group. I will make a reasonable effort to pair up drivers and riders, but its hard enough finding people a ride to the event, let alone for their bikes, so even though i give people an option to bring their own bike, assume you will not likely be able to do so unless you or a friend drives and brings a bike rack for your bikes.

EVENT DETAILS

This event has several parts to it:

1. THREE BIKING GROUPS

A) STANDARD RIDE (15 MILES, all on the paved bike trail, most bikes will be rentals)

B) ADVANCED RIDE (40 MILES, all on the paved bike trail, most bikes will be rentals)

C) EXTREME RIDE (50 - 55 miles, with 15+ miles of road riding, using your own bike, starting from the Upper West Side, riding to FDR State Park and then to a train station to go home)

For more details of the Rides, including full descriptions, go to my Bike Rides & FAQ Page here.

2. FDR STATE PARK - VOLLEYBALL, FRISBEE, BOATING, SWIMMING, ETC

FDR State Park  is a beautiful state park with some lovely grounds and picnicking areas. For folks

Once we return from the biking and get to the park ( probably no earlier than 2PM) people can play various sports like volleyball, frisbee and basketball at nearby courts. There is a pretty lake and  some short nature walks in the area that you can visit as well.

Please indicate your preferred activities on the RSVP form. Select the ones you are most likely to want to do.

NOTE: Be aware that there is an $8 per car entrance fee for the FDR State Park, which is in addition to any of my rates.  I have included this fee in the passenger rate for those getting a ride. Drivers who take 3 passengers will be reimbursed for their full costs.

3. BBQ IN LATE PM - We will be having an early dinner BBQ from about 4 to 6pm.

People who do not wish to bike can also choose to come just for the park activities and the BBQ. Just let me know below when you sign up that you are doing this. Also, realize that its less likely that I can get you a ride if you do not come for the day with us. So if you want to come only to the BBQ,  you will most likely need to get a ride there.

Helping at the event

As with all my events, we expect people to help out at various points, especially during the BBQ, so don't be surprised when we ask you for help! If you want to help leading a bike ride, or extra during the BBQ for a reduced rate, let me know in the form. If you are selected, I will be in touch with you directly closer to the event.

WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING?

Lunch, at least 1 liter of water, sunscreen & bug spray ( you never know this time of year!), comfortable shoes & clothing for biking and playing sports/boating/swimming, a small backpack/bag to enable you to carry your lunch and water while biking, a bathing suit if you plan to go swimming, a helmet if you bring your own bike, etc. Also, as we get closer and I know the weather, I might advise people to bring a sweater and a wind breaker - it gets colder when you ride, unless its really hot - you will appreciate it if its needed!

For more info on potential things to bring, see the FAQ page.
